2009 F1 championship awaits Alonso
December 11th 2008 00:18
Formula One Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso, says winning the championship next year with Renault will be a formality.
After a great finish to season 2008, Alonso wants to win the F1 title in 2009, which is now currently held by the youngest champion in history, Lewis Hamilton.
Although he did not feel comfortable driving in his new Renault, Alonso has changed his mentality and confirms another championship is well on the way.
"If its not this year, it will be the year after," Alonso said.
Alonso's wins in Singapore and Japan this year have provided the Renault driver with high expectations, with a world championship title in 2009 well on the cards.
"I am more willing than ever to win. The finale of 2008 went very well for me and my new team. We have gained a lot of confidence out of this," he said.
In regards to recently crowned champion Lewis Hamilton, Alonso says there is more to F1 immortality than being the youngest driver ever to win a title.
"Those records are great when you are driving, but when you retire and people look back on your career, they talk about the amount of championships you have won, not if you're the fattest, oldest or youngest driver ever to win a world title.
"Indeed those records are just an antidote for one to stay positive about the career that lays in front of them."
