AC Milan icon Paulo Maldini will play on for one more season the Italian giants announced last night.
The boss of Milan, Silvio Berlusconi said Maldini will have one more year under his belt before retiring.
"After 23 years as a professional and 1009 matches played, Paolo has decided to play for one more season" Berlusconi said.
Maldini - who will turn 40 years of age, has won 26 titles with the 'Rossonieri'. Despite the club not qualifying for the Champions League next season, many thought this would have been the end for one Italy's most prosperous players.
But the legacy Maldini holds is matched by few. Milan's official website labelled him "the greatest desire of all our hearts, our captain". After debuting for the Italian giants in 1985, the club would go on to experience some of its greatest glories.
The king of all left-backs, Maldini, who is on holiday in Miami with family, was always poised to succeed at Italy's most historical club. During the time of his reign, Milan went on to win seven Serie A titles (1987/88, 1991/92, 1992/93, 1993/94, 1995/96, 1998/99 y 2003/04), five Supercopa Italia titles (1988, 1992, 1993, 1994 y 2004) and one Copa Italia (2002/03).
In the international arena, Maldini went on to win the FIFA World club championship (2007), the intercontinental cup (1989 y 1990), five champions League titles (1988/89, 1989/90, 1993/94, 2002/03, 2006/07), and the European supercup (1989, 1990, 1995, 2003 y 2007).
As an international for Italy, the only piece of silverware Maldini did not get his hands on was the World Cup. Despite playing in four World Cups (Italy 1990, USA 1994, France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002), Maldini's closest attempt to winning the famed tournament was in the 1994 World Cup final, where Italy lost to Brazil on penalties.
