AFL- Melbourne demons showing promise
April 8th 2008 12:29
The best thing that can be said of a Melbourne team that has its season slipping from its grasp is that the performance against Premiers Geelong at Skilled park was one that showed immense promise and hope.
Many predicted a record thrashing, and given Melbourne's previous results this season the expectation of such a scoreline looked imminent.
But what we saw in the opening quarter was a team that is not prepared to raise the white flag just yet.
Melbourne took the game to last years Premiers and it looked for a brief moment that the Demons would recreate the modern version of a David and Goliath battle that could've spiralled the side to glory so early in the season.
However like true Premiers, Geelong once again typified their tenacity to take matches by the throat eventually winning by 32 points in what many believe was a speed bump on their way to another flag.
On the other side of the spectrum, Melbourne are fighting to save a season that looks to be heading for oblivion.
But not all hope is lost
There were signs that inspirational captain David Neitz still gets the best out of himself and his troops, which was evident throughout the five quarters.
Key players Adam Yze, Aaron Davey and Matthew Bate on their day form the necessary attacking components that would worry any teams in the AFL.
After such an effort against the dominant force in the competiton, Melbourne must believe that a repeat performance of similiar stature and verve will gurantee wins this season.
Despite a winless start to their campaign and many predicting a wooden spoon, the last thing the Demons should do is resort to panick and frustration. The loss on Sunday afternoon was a valuable lesson on terms of skill and attitude and this is something Melbourne need to take on board if they are to turn around their season.
The road to redemption starts now.
