Brett Kirk looks to be the key man against the Magpies this Saturday night

The Lowdown

The battle between these two teams always draw a crowd. The intensity in which they play their football appeals to all that love AFL. The Swans will be looking for victory to stay intrenched in the top four while the Magpies will be keen for a win to keep their top four hopes alive.

The teams

Star ruckman Peter Everitt will have a test on his injured hamstring along with Ed Barlow. It is believed Everitt will play against the Pies to fill the void left by Adam Goodes's suspension. The rest of the Swans line-up should be relatively unchanged for the blockbuster clash.

Collingwood will give both Josh Fraser and Leon Davis fitness tests to assess their availability for Saturday nights showdown with the Swans. Both Fraser (knee) and Davis (ankle) are likely to play for the Magpies.

For the record

The Magpies have won their past three games against the Sydney Swans, including their last match at ANZ stadium. The Swans were knocked out of last years finals by Collingwood, who went on to make the preliminary final.

The Swans however are on a six match winning streak. Sydney have enjoyed their best start to a season since 2003. The Swans are yet to win seven in a row under Paul Roos's tenure.

Key for Sydney

Brett Kirk's aura at the club cannot be questioned. His influence for the Swans is dynamic as he leads in crucial areas such as handballs (159), Disposals (296) and tackles (82). Kirk's ability to marshall his troops when times are dire has seen the Swans become the most competitive team in the competition in terms of never say die approaches.

The Swans defensive structure is the most clinical in the AFL in shutting down both points and opposition. They are yet to concede 1000 points after 14 rounds of the AFL. They have conceded 957 in total. The likes of Kirk and the Bolton brothers ensure the Swans are the best tackling side in the competition. If this match goes down to the nitty gritty, back the Swans.

Key for Collingwood

Alan Didak is a key man for the Magpies. He has kicked the ball (240) more times than other player in the AFL this season. This shows how effective and crucial he has became in scoring goals and distributing opportunities for his full forwards to dominate. The Swans must shut his influence down.

The likes of Leon Davis and Dale Thomas provide the Magpies with the freakish ability to guide Collingwood home if need be. Thomas in particular has became a key ingredient for the Pies this year and will be eager to live up to his billing on such an important match-up with the Swans.

Where it will be won

Both midfields must look to dominate to ensure goalscoring opportunities. The loss of Adam Goodes is a huge blow for the Swans as he is their most creative and skillful player. Alan Didak has the potential to take control in this encounter. If given space and time, Didak will ensure quality for his forward line to dominate proceedings early on.

The Swans forward line is more menacing though. The likes of Michael O'loughlin and Barry Hall can form the most lethal goalscoring pair in the competition. The return of Hall in particular has seen the side score more points. If both are accurate on Saturday night, the Swans should win.

Prediction

If this encounter comes down to passion and verve, the Swans should have enough experience to close this game down. Collingwood will look to get away early to ensure the game is played on their terms. The Swans have only lost one game at home this season and that record looks set to stay against the Magpies. It should be a close encounter nonetheless.

Magpies display fortune and glory

May 24th 2008 00:22
Left behind - Collingwood were just a level above as they destroyed the Reigning premiers

What an outstanding performance from the Collingwood magpies last night.

Infront of over 75,000 fans, Collingwood have finally displayed all the necessary components that will challenge Geelong's stranglehold on the AFL in recent seasons.

The Magpies tackled without mercy and attacked without hinderance. They played with heart and are now a team that looks set to shine for the rest of the season.

Many thought it was the blockbuster encounter of the AFL this season after one of the great preliminary finals last year saw both Geelong and Collingwood fight blow for blow for Grand Final supremacy.

Unfortunetly for the Cats, the Magpies just looked the more eager last night.

From the opening bounce, Collingwood allowed Geelong no space and time, their ball playing capabilities literally squandered.

In simple terms the Magpies just wanted it more and it will be no surprise now to coach Mick Malthouse that his team are now in a position to warrant fear and respect.

The key now for the Magpies will be to maintain their recent intensity against all sides in the AFL. This is where the premiership contenders truly stand out, and it is why Geelong have dominated for the period they have.

The Cats have shown their respective opposition this season no chance. Mark Thompson has transformed a side that two years ago was the laughing stock of the AFL.

At present, despite this heavy loss, they are the benchmark of the AFL by the length of the Nile river such has been their superiority.

I can almost guarantee that the Cats will almost certaintly bounce back from this heavy loss and win the following week.

The question for the Magpies however remains one of consistency. They, like most Melbourne teams, thrive on crowd support and adrenaline. When these two components are in check like last night, the Magpies can be a pleasure to watch.

But how often have we seen a team with the star-studded status of Collingwood regularly falter in matches they are supposed to win.

TIme and time again they have consistently failed to live up to their billing as the Victorian capitals great hope for premiership glory.

Collingwood's ability in big matches cannot be questioned. They have now shown they are right up their with the best of teams.

Whether they can finish off the lesser lights in a long and winding season remains to be seen.

So far the signs are that the Magpies will be there late September. Their performance last night was one that Collingwood fans can cherish forever.

Question is, how long can the Magpies keep this up?

The next five weeks will show if Collingwood are serious about claiming the Premiership that has eluded them for so long now. Pies fans are now set for one hell of a ride for the remainder of season 2008.

Goodes has to rediscover his class ability

Adam Goodes is right up there with the greats of the game.

He has already won a grand final and has been awarded the Brownlow Medal two times. The games biggest individual accolade.

He is a player that has demonstrated an ability to inspire those around him and perform feats that really only the likes of Chris Judd and Gary Ablett can rival.

However Goodes has been helped by a champion team in the Swans that in a way, always play within a structure that allows Goodes to take control.

This year though he appears to be unsettled.

The losses of key personal such as Malcheski, Hall and Everitt have not only disrupted Sydney's game but that of Adam Goodes as well.

He was found wanting on some occasions against the premier team in the AFL in Geelong.

His kicks at goal were inaccurate to say the least and this eventually cost the Swans dearly in the last quarter.

But not all is lost just yet.

Goodes is an elite player that can transform a game at his will. On his day there are few that can match his ability to sieze an opportunity.

He will be forced once again to dig deep and provide the Swans with the passion and skills that have made them such an imposing outfit to play against.

Geelong's forty point win over the Swans was a clear misconception on the match.

The Swan's fought to the last quarter and provided the Cat's with their sternest test this season to date.

All this while players such as Hall, Everitt, Malcheski and Kennelly were sidelined.

At least the character of the side cannot be questioned.

The Swans really pride themselves on their work ethic and with Goodes in the side, anything is possible.

When their player roster is at full strength and Goodes returns to form, The Swans will once again surprise those that think their time is over and out.

In saying this, the Sydney club really need to click into gear early if they are to compete at the business end of the year.

Their game against North Melbourne tomorrow is a real danger game for the Swans.

It will be a solid test of their character to perform away from home and it is a contest that the Swans simply must win if they are to assert their presence in this years competition.

Swans coach Paul Roos will be eager to see the Swans and Goodes perform out of their skins in order for the likes of Hall and Everitt to return in a postion of strength.

Whether the odds be great or be small, Goodes needs to find his feet and take control.

Persistance is the key.
