Beautiful Barca destroy Atletico, Inter regain lead

October 4th 2008 23:52

Barcelona this morning thrashed Atletico Madrid 6-1 in the Camp Nou in a display of football resembling the glory days of the club back in 2006.

Inside the first eight minutes, Barcelona were 3 nil up and went on with the job in style, to play themselves back into form.

Barcelona are now two points behind league leaders Villarreal, who earlier accounted for Real Betis by 2-1.

The football played by Barcelona was decisive. In just the third minute of the match, Mexican back Rafael Marquez put the home side in the lead.

Two minutes later, Samuel Eto'o gave the Catalan giants a two goal lead. That effort was followed swiftly by none other than Lionel Messi who put the game beyond Atletico's reach inside the first ten minutes.

Indeed Atletico were experiencing a trauma too painful to describe. History was being made at the Camp Nou and the Madrid side was on the wrong end of it.

Samuel Eto'o scored his second goal in just the eighteenth minute of the first half. Four nil now, and the 75,232 Barca fans were having a night to remember.

Eidur Gudjohnsen also netted for Barca, sending the Spanish giants into the main break leading by 5-1.

The second half was just one of pure relaxation for Barca, while it was one of torture for Atletico.

Not even star striker Sergio Aguero could mend the pain experienced by his side as he was substituted early in the second half by manager Javier Aguirre.

When things could not get any worse, French striker Thierry Henry joined the party in the 29th minute of the second half to seal an historic 6-1 victory.

It has been a fair while since Barce fans witnessed a level of football this high. After two seasons without any silverware, the Spanish giants could have finally found the antidote to excel in the La Liga and Champions League this season.

In the Italian Serie A, Inter Milan have regained the position on top of the ladder after disposing Bologna 2-1 at the San Siro.

Swedish striker Ibrahimovic and Brazilian ace Adriano scored the goals for the home side, who were under severe pressure to succeed following a loss last week to arch rivals AC Milan.

Inter are now level on 13 points alongside Lazio, who failed to steer clear on top of the Serie A following a one all draw against Leece.
