Bolt racing to fortune

December 10th 2008 00:18

Triple Beijing Olympic Gold Medallist, Usain Bolt will receive an astounding $154,000 per race in 2009.

The Jamaican sprinter, who was a massive figure in Beijing, will be the highest paid athlete in history with the help of increased sponsorship and public appearances.

Bolt's representative, Ricky Simms confirmed the massive paycheck that his star sprinter will receive next year.

With the earnings Bolt is set to receive in 2009, he will pass world class athletes Yelena Isinbayeba, Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin as the sprinter with the biggest income in the history of track and field sport.

What counts in Bolt's favour is his versatility on the track.

Unlike most sprinters who can only participate in the 100 metre races, Bolt can do 100m and 200m races with relative ease.

Barring any injury, Bolt should stand to receive yearly earnings of over 3 million Euros.

Despite the rich paycheck, British representative Simms says Bolt will not rival the earnings of the other superstars of world sport.

"Bolt has converted himself into a rich man, but he will not rival the likes of Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and David Beckham when it comes to yearly earnings."

Bolt on the other hand has already stated that he will not participate in every sprinters race in the Golden League next year.

The Jamaican’s main objective for 2009 is the world championships in Berlin, where he won three gold medals and established himself as the fastest man on the planet.

Can I be the first to do what we all know reporters will do for this story?

"Bolt will receive $154,000 per race in 2009, which calculates to $1540 per metre, or a tick over $15,000 per second."
