Cade Foster, Adam Meyer, and NFL Week #9

So the "Game of the Century" lived up to its billing in a defensive way. It was the opposite of what Stanford and USC produced, yet it was just as captivating. And for several reasons Nick Saban will be kicking himself. I'll use the word "kicking" carefully because that is what lost the Rolling Tide this football game.
Alabama was able to move the ball reasonably well against LSU but could not finish off drives with touchdowns or field goals for that matter. The emphasis is on field goals here because the Tide went 2 for 6 on field goal attempts in the game and lost by a score of 9-6 failing to cover the five point spread. LSU's defense came up big especially with that interception by Eric Reid at the one yard line. Still if Alabama makes two more field goals than they missed they win that game and cover the spread. But games are not won on should haves or could haves. In college football I'd go as far to say that field goals and extra points are far from givens.
Even at a powerhouse like Alabama, Cade Foster failed terribly on albeit long field goal attempts. By the time he attempted that 52 yard attempt in overtime you could tell his confidence was completely absent. I'm sure Cade Foster has the longer leg otherwise Jeremy Shelley (the Tide's other kicker) would have been out there. Mr. Foster won't forget this game for a while though because the Tide had their chances in this in-the-trenches battle.
Vegas wise guy and handicapper Adam Meyer put down a $100,000 bet on September 29th at the M Resort in Las Vegas. He collected $1.5 million dollars on the Cardinals miraculous World Series victory. Meyer hedged his bet and put $250,000 on the Texas Rangers as well. You know the old saying if you can only win big if you can bet big. Congrats Mr. Meyer. I will go into further depth about the Cardinals since the 2012 MLB futures odds have just come out on Examiner.com so look for that article.
Looking at the Week 9 NFL odds all week it will be interesting to see the Falcons dropped from nine point favorites down to seven against the Colts. Two AFC South teams labeled as Super Bowl contenders heading into this season, the Falcons and Saints, have struggled on the road thus far. The 49ers are four point favorites going into Washington and have not showed any signs of slowing down with straight up wins or covering the pointspread.
The Packers travel to play the Chargers after a bye week. San Diego had a short week to think about their gut wrenching loss to the Chiefs on Halloween. The total of 50.5 seems a little low unless for some reason both passing attacks fall flat on their face due to an over consumption of fish tacos. I also look forward to this Sunday night game between the Steelers and Ravens. Pittsburgh seems to be trending up now and Baltimore barely escaped at home against Arizona. But throw out whatever these teams did previously because it's usually a knockdown dragout heavyweight fight whenever these two rivals get together.
If there are no touchdowns in the Baltimore-Pittsburgh game, I project Billy Cundiff and Shaun Suisham to kick better than Alabama's Cade Foster. They are NFL kickers but you never know.

I'm sure when you think of great NFL kickers Suisham does not come to mind. Yes he was undrafted but besides Janikowski name me another kicker who was actually worth a high draft pick. Check out "Mr. Irrelevant" a few years ago (Ryan Succop Chiefs kicker) was one of the better kickers in college out of South Carolina.
But guess what. I'd bet Suisham's misses last night would have looked better than Cade Foster's. Those kicks weren't even close man. Foster reminds of me Cowboy kicker David Buehler out of USC. Some kickers have some bulk to them because they played linebacker or some other positions in earlier in their careers but it hardly makes them good kickers.
