Federer and the massacre that was Del Potro
January 28th 2009 00:29
Juan Martin Del Potro was in shock and probably still is after his Australian Open quarter-final loss to Roger Federer last night.
Not that losing to Federer is such a bad thing. Its the way he lost that Del Potro struggled to come to terms with.
The 20 year old Argentine lost to Federer 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 in an hour and 20 minutes to suffer arguably the most heart wrenching defeat of his young career.
With total sincerity yet with the utter frustration that comes with such a loss, Del Potro confessed within minutes of his defeat that "the only part of the night I enjoyed was when they presented both players on court."
Indeed the massacre that was Federer at his best wounded Del Potro deeply.
The world no.6 'wanted to kill' the Swiss maestro after the defeat while the world no.2 was a little more sincere.
"I feel sorry for Del Potro because it seems I always play well against him," Federer said.
For Federer, it was his fourth consecutive win over Del Potro without having dropped a single set to the young Argentine.
Del Potro says he was lost for ideas against an opponent that was playing like a Grand Slam champion.
"It was a thrashing. I was on court and I didn't know what to do. I was hoping that I would enjoy the moment of playing the greatest player, but in the end, all I wanted was for my suffering to end.
"Indeed I have not felt that way for a long time. He played perfectly."
Federer now heads to his 19th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearance and is in a great position to equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam titles.
Although Rafael Nadal stands in Federer's way, for Del Potro, the Swiss star ‘played like a world no.1.’
