Federer begins 2009 with a defeat

January 3rd 2009 00:22

Former world no.1 Roger Federer has started 2009 with a loss against British player Andy Murray in the Semi-finals of an exhibition tournament in the Arab Emirates.

2009 has already started in a less than positive note for Federer, who was looking forward to regaining his no.1 crown currently at the hands of Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

But Murray got in his way early. The world no.4 defeated Federer 4-6 6-2 7-6 in an entertaining match between two world class players.

As for Murray, 2009 could not have gotten off to a better start.

The British player, who was runner up at the US Open in 2008, has already defeated American James Blake and now Federer in the exhibition tournament being played in the Arab Emirates.

His overall record against Federer is terrific, with 4 wins against the Swiss maestro for just 2 losses.

Murray now awaits Rafael Nadal in the final after he took care of Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the other Semi-final. The Spaniard beat him 6-2 6-3.

The winner of the final in the Arab Emirates will recieve a pay check of $250,000
