Football and politics blend in well for Kanoute

January 9th 2009 23:31

It’s been a very long time since football was nothing more than just a passionate sport that anyone could play.

The world game has become a multimillion dollar franchise across the globe with a FIFA head office that has more members than the United Nations.

It is with this power that football truly shows its colours. The game can be used to broadcast messages of hope across the globe or indeed views of hate and injustice.

Players have taken it upon themselves to broadcast their views on the world we live in by wearing provocative t-shirts under their jerseys or performing powerful gestures.

Even the fans of the game, with their posters and voices, can vent their frustrations on a particular event that has caused them great grief.

With the current state the world is in at the moment, it was only a matter of time to see a player or fan vent their displeasure on the events currently plaguing the globe at the moment.

Three days ago, Deportivo La Coruna and Sevilla were playing their quarter final matchup in the Copa Del Rey.

Sevilla won the game 2-1 with one of their goal scorers being star Mali striker Frederic Kanoute.

His celebration after he scored the goal has now caught the attention of the Spanish federation of football.

Kanoute lifted his jersey to show a black shirt with the words 'Palestina' in reply to Israel's attacks on the Palestinian capital of Gaza.

"It was something that needed to be done", Kanoute says, without showing any regret for his actions.

Although his views will be supported by many across the globe, the Spanish federation of football will fine the Sevilla striker 3,000 Euros for breaking the law that compromises a player taking off their jersey to provoke response and receive negative attention.

For Kanoute however, he will see the fine as a small price to pay for getting a huge message across.
