Hockey News Roundup
Some hockey news you wouldn't read just anywhere...
Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans are calling for the resignation of president and CEO Lyle Bauer. A recent Sun poll asked fans who they blame for the Bombers' dismal season, and fingers were pointed firmly at Bauer (not Mike Kelly, as expected!). Is it time for a change of management?
The death of Grade Eight hockey player Evan Frustaglio has put junior hockey into the spotlight. The boy died from the H1N1 influenza after playing in a London, Ontario hockey tournament over the weekend.
Frustaglio's league (the GTHL) has reportedly engaged in very public and rigorous efforts to up sanitation since the boy's death. And so you'd expect - the reputation of the youth league is at stake.
Media outlets have been eager to link this H1N1 death (the 30th in Ontario) to sanitary conditions in hockey outlets.
Olympics opinions have started flying around. ESPN.com's John Buccigross has given his pick for the lineups of both Team USA and Team Canada in the leadup to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Buccigross piece (Like 'em or not, My Olympic hockey selections) urges that the underrated Steven Stamkos be included, though he says 'no decision will match not putting Crosby on the 2006 Canadian Olympics team'. Ouch!
The love-it-or-hate-it list has attracted more than 100 comments.
A second 'Bauer' is making news. Equipment giant Bauer Hockey have just released the video for their Vapor X:60 stick, which is creating buzz around the web.
Bauer have a history of innovation - in 1927 they were the first company to begin producing hockey skates in which the blade was attached to the boot. They were also one of the first companies to embrace celebrity endorsement, paying superstar Bobby Hull to promote their products long before Nike had even heard of Tiger Woods.
