Humble Hamilton now an F1 world champion
November 5th 2008 22:31
Lewis Hamilton addressed 1,800 McLaren workers at the firm's headquarters responsible for not only building his car but helping him shape a future now filled with success and greens.
Indeed Hamilton gestured at the silverware and said: "All of these trophies are your hard work.
Those comments from the new world Formula One world champion were followed with applause, not to mention the whoops and cheers, from all those involved in making Hamilton the youngest world champ in racing history.
When the excitement in the audience subsided, Hamilton then gave out a solemn vow.
"I love this team," Hamilton added. "I'm going nowhere."
"I'm with the team I've always dreamt of driving for, and I've got the car I always wanted - so why change?.
"I don't know how long I'll be in F1 - but I want to see my career out with this team, and that's my plan."
Maybe Hamilton wants to stay due to the solemn support cast by his team.
Just days after clinching the championship in Brazil, Hamilton entered McLaren's building with a smile and a wave. "Morning everyone," he said, as if commencing a standard day at the office.
People who have been working double shifts for weeks laid down their tools and computer mice to applaud Hamilton and his success.
Since the dramatic conclusion to the Brazilian Grand Prix, Hamilton has been revelling in his own happiness and that which he has brought to others.
He recalled a moment at the post-race party in Sao Paulo when he sat quietly in a corner watching others celebrate his success.
"It makes me happy to make other people happy," he said. "Just looking at all the people at the party singing 'We Are the Champions'... it was so good. I'm like a sponge for positive energy."
The team's boss, Ron Dennis, who spotted Hamilton's talent and self-belief when the racer was just a boy, usually comes across as a serious, even humourless figure.
But as he listened to his greatest discovery address the rest of his employees, he cracked more smiles than ever.
"We have had some great drivers at this team," Dennis said later. "But this is Lewis's world championship. This is his day."
Indeed it was Hamilton's day. Despite grasping the formula one championship from the clutches of Brazilian driver Felippe Massa, thus sending his team into raptures, the Briton celebrated his victory with cuddles from girlfriend and Pussycat Dolls siren Nicole Scherzinger.
If Hamilton needs any more motivation to seek Michael Schumacher’s world record seven championship titles, having one of the most lusted women on the planet by your side on race day surely gets you in the mood to achieve anything.
After becoming the youngest world champion ever, Hamilton has already achieved history. There will be more to follow.
