Inter should rap up Serie A title
May 18th 2008 12:25
Inter Milan look to be crowned Serie A champions for the third year running and personally i think they deserve it.
For the past two seasons they have dominated Italy due to their flair in attack and their great composure in defence.
They are a side that really look to go forward at any moment possible with the likes of Cambiasso leading the way in the midfield beautifully.
Other than their title challengers in Roma and Juventus, Inter have been the only side this season that are capable of scoring goals on a free flowing basis.
They rank third in attack behind Roma and Juventus with 67 goals scored this season, with Swedish superstar Ibrahimovic hitting the back of the net for Inter 20 times.
What makes their attack more impressive however is the imposing goal scoring average they pocess when they are at home in the San Siro.
They average just over 2 goals a game this season and that alone is why that have dominated the Serie A for the past two seasons.
Inter's willingness to put teams to the sword at the San Siro has paid dividends this season as they are ranked No.1 in terms of winning percentage at home this year.
Out of the 19 occasions they have played at home this season, Inter have won 15, drawn 3 and lost 1 in an otherwise perfect year for the Italian giants.
Their away record has also been very imposing, with 9 wins, 7 draws and 2 losses coming from their 18 matches played away from the San Siro this season.
That record is also the best in the league, most possibly due to their defensive presence outback with the likes of Matarazzi, Zanetti and Maicon forming an imposing backline which hardly leaks any goals.
Inter's defence this season has once again paved the way for their recent succeses. They have only conceded 26 goals this season at an average of 0.76 goals per game alone.
That is once again testiment to the character of a club that has faced stiff opposition in the likes of Roma and Juventus who always seem to produce goals when it matters.
Despite some close calls this season, Inter should now focus on getting the job done against Parma tomorrow morning.
They would be foolish to throw away such a hard fought season to the hands of Roma, who have been second for 50 or so weeks now.
What a travesity it would be if Italy's best team for the past two seasons falters on the weekend that truly counts.
They have challenged all before them and have come out the other side with great grit and determination despite a sluggish finish at the back end of the season.
If they are crowned champions tomorrow morning (AEST),Inter must finally acknowledge the fact that they have been by far Italy's best side throughout the last couple of years.
If they can hold on to that honour, European domination beckons for the Milan giants.
