Kuranyi says sorry, but Germany career over

October 13th 2008 19:42

German football striker Kevin Kuranyi has apologised for his decision to leave his teammates behind during their world cup qualifier against Russia - but his playing days for Germany are now over.

Kuranyi admitted he committed "an error" when he chose to abandon his German teammates due to his lack of game time.

The Schalke 04 striker revealed all in a Gelsenkirchen press conference and argued his departure "was provoked through years of built frustration".

Germany manager Joachim Low did not choose to use Kuranyi against Russia. Germany ended up winning the match 2-1 but most of the controversy was caused outside of the pitch with Kuranyi's departure.

Kuranyi later revealed he indeed asked for Low's permission to leave the stadium and go home.

Low disallowed his request and that pulled the trigger for Kuranyi's actions.

At halftime of the game against the Russians, Kuranyi left the game without advising anyone. The consequences are now immediate and the German national team will not allow Kuranyi to play for Germany under his current cloud of misjudgement.
