There is only one man in town - Messi dominates the minds of Beijing
Messimania now dominates Shanghai.
With his game, the Argentine star captivated all fanatics who watched, in the process delivering a performance that comes with being one of Football's biggest global icons.
When Messi was in possession of the football, the crowd followed with ovation. The expectation cast on the Barcelona star did little to hinder his performance against the Ivory Coast.
He scored a terrific goal courtesy of a magnificent through ball by Juan Roman Riquelme. The chemistry between those two now augers well for both Argentina and the Olympics in general.
Messi's participation for the Beijing Olympics had to overcome a drama with twists and turns, due to Barcelona's keen desire to keep the Argentine star in Spain.
However, Messi's presence in Argentina's quest to defend the gold achieved in Athens 2004, has cast an aura of anticipation from the Chinese faithful.
Against the Ivory Coast, 'the flea' was clinical, scoring a goal and setting up the second. His performance lit up all who watched in the stadium of Shanghai.
There were flags and posters with Messi's name in the stands, while hundreds more wore jerseys with his name.
All who watched were left satisfied indeed. The magic that is Lionel Messi has been cast in Argentina's debut in defence of Olympic gold.
