Milan's football fashion losing form
September 18th 2008 23:26
They have won 18 international club tournaments and are the reigning world club football champions, but something out Milan way is not functioning the way it’s supposed to.
A team filled with genuine superstars, Milan have the roster and the mentality to win any tournament on their day.
Indeed, when they are on a roll, they are impossible to stop.
But there lies Milan's problem.
When they are bereft of any momentum, they struggle big time. When they start from ground zero, their football suffers.
But how? And why?
Surely a team containing reigning world player of the year Kaka and new recruit Ronaldinho would cause some damage to opposition teams.
And with a defence containing Kaladze, Maldini, Zambrotta, and Nesta, Milan should not have trouble conceding goals either.
Yet they find themselves second last in the Serie A with only hapless Cagliari behind them.
Milan has lost their opening two games of the season, scoring only one goal and conceding four in the process.
Milan coach Carlos Ancelotti knows how to succeed, but one suggests his time in Milan is all curtains soon.
Although Milan rediscovered some zing in their UEFA cup win over FC Zurich this morning, one wonders how they ended up in that competition in the first place.
A footballing power like Milan are renowned for winning Champions league titles, not participating with the likes of Everton, Getafe and Zurich for a UEFA cup trophy.
The likes of Kaka, Seedorf, Pirlo, Gattuso, and Ronaldinho now have to suffer a season without a tilt at Europe's highest club honour.
With such a star studded side, Milan failed to crack the top four last season, finishing fifth and condemning themselves to below tier European club competition.
It could be a blessing in disguise though.
German club giants Bayern Munich did not participate in the Champions League last season due to their failure to qualify the year before in the Bundesliga.
Even though they failed to win the UEFA cup as well, Munich's form in their domestic league was impressive, finishing as champions and regaining a spot in Europe's premier club competition.
Maybe this could be the trigger for Milan to show some much needed form and display the football we know they can play.
Surely the form must turn around soon enough.
If it doesn't, the only flare we will be seeing out Milan way are those outside the football pitch.
And as Milan goalkeeper Dida experienced, flares like that can be cruel.
