Murray the man for Australian Open
January 11th 2009 00:08
The young British Tennis star has defeated Roger Federer in the last three matches, and has captured two tournament titles in as many weeks, prompting one to suggest that Andy Murray is the player most likely to take the Australian Open by the scruff of the neck.
Murray has continued his remarkable start to 2009 by defeating Andy Roddick in the ATP final in Doha in straight sets 6-4 6-2.
His win in Doha has allowed Murray to capture his second consecutive Qatar Open title in as many weeks, despite battling back complaints which surfaced in his semi-final victory against Federer.
With the form he is in at the moment, many consider Murray as the firm favourite to win the first Grand Slam of the year which is now just days away.
Although his every move on court looks tuned to perfection, Murray insists that his game has not reached its full potential.
"I haven't yet reached the height of my best Tennis," Murray says.
"What I really need to do now is replicate the form I showed in Wimbledon and the US Open last year. But if I do play at my best, I know that I can beat the best."
Murray has now reached the stage of his career that could yield multiple Grand Slam victories.
Ever since his US Open final loss to Federer late last year, Murray has consistently been on the right side of tussles between the Swiss superstar, not to mention against opponents like Rafael Nadal as well.
Even Roddick believes that Murray has the necessary arsenal to go all the way at this years first Grand Slam.
"He is now displaying his best form; I think he is now able to win the big tournaments."
Indeed Murray is in career defining touch in the lead-up to the Australian Open, and will take a power of stopping.
His groundstrokes are powerful and accurate and his serve completes what has now become a very dangerous bow in men's Tennis.
Considering hard-court surfaces is where he reigns supreme, it is without doubt that the Australian Open already has its man to beat come January 19, when the Grand Slam kicks off two weeks of enthralling on court action.
