Nadal dreams for Olympic Gold
August 6th 2008 23:29
Rafael Nadal has now achieved his primary goal for 2008: from August 18th, he will be the new world number one player in the ATP rankings.
But nevertheless, the Spaniard will not back down and has firmly set his sights on claiming gold in Beijing. Ultimately, Nadal will love nothing more than to see Spain break their own record for most medals achieved in the Olympics, surpassing the effort of Barcelona 1992 (13 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze).
"In this tournament, the points for the world ranking for me are of less importance" Nadal said.
"What we want as a team is to represent our nation in the best possible way, by winning medals".
For Nadal, he will approach his Olympics hand in hand with Spain's other Tennis contingent which includes David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, Nicolás Almagro, Carla Suárez, Virginia Ruano Pascual, Anabel Medina, Nuria Llagostera and María José Martínez.
After training under lights at the Olympic Tennis complex in Beijing, an important group of journalists waited for the Spaniards with one objective: to know the sensation of the new world number one.
Nadal and his teammates did not expect anything else. All of Nadal's companions were made to listen to the champion of Roland Garros and Wimbledon 2008.
"The no.1 ranking is a nice triumph after many years of chasing. But we are now at the Olympics, which is also a terrific experience".
"All I want to do is to live this Olympic spirit, enjoy the people attending, and watch the other sports on television".
After hearing the same questions over and over, Nadal was prepared to leave and rest up for the gruelling competition ahead. That was until one journalist asked him: “how do achieve so much strength?"
The three time French Open champion opened his eyes and murmured; until he found the answer he was looking for.
"Do not believe that I am invincible.....the truth is, I do not see myself stronger than anybody".
