Nadal reigns supreme in ATP rankings
February 3rd 2009 00:24
With his sixth Grand Slam title under his belt, Rafael Nadal has edged further away from Roger Federer in the fight for the world no.1 ranking.
Nadal is now over 3000 points ahead of Federer after winning the Australian Open just a couple of days ago.
Nadal currently sits on 14260 points while Federer is on 11000.
Overall, the top five players in the ATP rankings remain unchanged with Djokovic, Murray and Davydenko all filling up the top five places.
However, there is a mass difference near the root of the top ten with several positional changes.
Roddick dethrones young Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro back into seventh position, despite making the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
Fernando Verdasco also moved into the top ten for the first time in his career, now occupying ninth position in the ATP rankings after a stellar semi-final run which nearly yielded the prized scalp of compatriot Nadal.
Probably the most confusing addition in the ATP top ten rankings is Argentine David Nalbandian.
Nalbandian, who won the Sydney Medibank international early in the year, lost in the second round of the Australian Open but still finds himself in the top ten.
In his expense, Frenchman Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and James Blake have been bundled out of the top ten despite both going further than the 27 year old Argentine.
