Nadal the master of Toronto
July 27th 2008 23:04
Spaniard Rafael Nadal won his fifth consecutive title after beating German Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 6-2 in the Toronto Masters yesterday.
Nadal is now just 300 points away from claiming the world no.1 tag currently in possession of Roger Federer.
The world rankings could eventually see a new leader with the Cincinnati masters beginning tomorrow.
Federer, who was knocked out in the first round in Toronto, needs to make the Cincinnati Masters his own if he is to keep his four year grip on the world no.1 ranking.
But it is Nadal who is currently the best player in men's Tennis. He disposed of Kiefer easily, claiming a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the German.
After dominating on the surfaces of clay, which yielded his fourth consecutive French Open crown, Nadal ended Federer's dominance on the surfaces of Wimbledon in a final worthy of remembrance.
If that was not enough, the 22 yr old Spaniard obtained his seventh title this year, downing Kiefer (37th in the world) in the Toronto Masters in relatively easy fashion.
Nadal's recent triumph signified him with his 12th Master Series title and his 30th title overall. It is no doubt Nadal is experiencing the peak of his powers and there are few now that can dent his aura in world Tennis.
The Cincinnati Masters could indeed crown a new king in men's Tennis. If Nadal wins the tournament beginning next Monday, Federer's four year reign on top will be over.
