Out with the new and in with the old

October 26th 2008 22:41
Mishra is mobbed by his teammates

New born Indian hero Amit Mishra could feel the wrath of India's selectors despite taking seven wickets in a terrific performance against Australia in the second test.

The 25-year-old was picked for the second Test in Mohali as a last-minute replacement for injured Indian skipper Anil Kumble. A replacement that cast Australia's batsmen into doubt and uncertainty over the course of the five day test match.

Mishra's seven wickets helped India to a thumping 320-run win, and the Australians are desperate to avoid a repeat in this week's Delhi Test.

Yet they may receive help from the Indian selectors.

With an ageing Anil Kumble raring to play on his favourite surface, Mishra could be placed aside for the test which starts on Wednesday.

It seems the thing counting against Mishra is Kumble's form at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, with the Indian captain averaging an impressive 55 wickets at a rate of just 15.41 in six Tests at the venue.

Indeed Kumble became only the second bowler in history to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings at the venue back in 1999.

The 38-year-old's injured shoulder is improving rapidly and he is keen to lead India again with time running out on his career spanning 18 years and 131 Tests.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who stood in as captain for Kumble in the Mohali Test, has kept his cards close to his chest, but he too believes in Mishra and his capabilities in test cricket.

And who wouldn't.

If one can take seven wickets in his debut test match against the best opposition cricket has to offer, India's selectors, let alone Dhoni would be fools not to give the 25 year old another shot.

But yet again Kumble stands in front of Mishra. The captain who is out of form but remains the leader of a side now flexing their muscles against the baggy green.

After an 18 year career, one thinks he does have some aura of control among the selectors who should be desperate to give him the career swansong he deserves.

And rightfully so.

After that though, Mishra’s time in Test cricket will finally be set for action.
