Paul Scholes a red devil by blood

April 30th 2008 10:35
Paul Scholes was the man of the moment against Barcelona

What a way to score your first champions Leagues goal this season.

From outside the box, Zambrotta clears the ball to Scholes's waiting feet.

The man takes the strike and the rest as they say is history.

Paul Scholes has always been a quality player for both England and United. He, to this day, continues to play the game with a spirit and passion that suggests the red head is on the verge of retirement.

Against Barcelona, Scholes really only had the one opportunity.

Like true champions he storms the ball into the top corner with Valdes diving in an act of hope more than anything. In that shot alone, we witnessed a man who is now beginning to see the light at the end of an outstanding career.

In a team filled with superstars, Scholes will hardly make the back pages of the glossest celebrity mag England or Hollywood has to offer.

But yet again, he is not a man for these moments. Scholes really prides himself on the back of hard work. He is a determined character of English football that never seizes to amaze with the quality that he continues to produce.

United fans got the full dosage today.

In the 15th minute of the game, Old Trafford starts to rejoice and Scholes presence and status in the world game is enhanced.

What makes him such a great player these days is his constant ability to perform in certain situations hence today's goal against Barcelona.

Scholes will always be there behind you, waiting to defend and clear any misconceptions United might have in defence.

What makes him more valuable is his ability to attack and offer the likes of Ronaldo and Tevez more options in route to goal. Something that Messi lacked with Barcelona this morning.

In the end he was the difference in United qualifying for their fourth Champions League final. Most will now favour them to go all the way.

Scholes is to be commended for the way he disciplines himself on a football pitch. Some players are after glory but Scholes just wants to make it count.

On the other side of the spectrum, Barcelona once again displayed football that only few can match.

Despite being at home, United never really got in the groove against the Catalan giants who so desperatly look in need of a striker.

Their midfield is perfect with the likes of Xavi, Ineista and Deco controlling the ball with great aplomb.

However their greatest attacking option was once again Lionel Messi.

Despite being on the losing side, Messi showcased why he is now football's equivalent to Tiger Woods.

Through the course of the two legs, Messi's matchup with Ronaldo was the highlight of a tie that promised loads of goals.

Although Ronaldo will play in the final, Messi can count himself the victor in their own personal duel for football supremacy.

Messi weaved his way past United's defence, much to the disdain of the Old Trafford faithful.

Everytime he got past a defender, you could fill the cold rush of blood filling the odd 70,000 Red Devils, who were baying for his blood.

In the end, Messi nearly gave Manchester Bipolar disorder such was his performance.

Thankfully for United fans, they can breath easier.

They are only ninety minutes away from experiencing Champions League glory.
