Raul now king of Madrid
February 1st 2009 00:27
Real Madrid captain Raul has equalled club great Alfredo Di Stefano's goal tally as the Spaniard opened the scoring in his side's 2-0 win over Numancia.
Raul now has 307 goals with 'Los Merengue' and stands alongside Di Stefano as the greatest goal scorer in Madrid's history.
It was a terrific night for Madrid as they notched up their sixth consecutive triumph with victory away to Numancia.
All eyes were on Raul as he attempted to equal Di Stefano's goal scoring record of 307 goals.
He did exactly that with a clinical strike that will be remembered by Madrid fans for ages to come.
As a captain should, Raul laid the foundations for Madrid to outclass Numancia for the rest of the encounter.
Dutch midfielder Robben then added the icing on the cake for Madrid as he scored the decisive goal to seal the three points for 'Los Merengue'.
The only downer for Madrid was the expulsion of midfielder Fernando Gago, who was sent off for repeated offences.
His departure allowed Numancia to gain a little bit of momentum throughout the match, but nothing to give Madrid fans any worries.
Although Madrid's win undoubtedly belongs to Raul, their victory is just another small step up the ladder in pursuit of rivals Barcelona, who sit nine points ahead with a game in hand.
