Real Madrid in the box seat
April 27th 2008 12:14
If all goes to plan in the Primera liga this weekend Real Madrid will once again be crowned Spain's best team for two seasons running.
After Barcelona's loss at the hands of Deportivo La Coruna, Madrid need only to beat Athletico Bilbao and hope Villarreal lose to Real Betis to secure their 31st La Liga title.
With such an outstanding reputation and history, you would think they will win tomorrow and celebrate regardless of Villarreal's result on the weekend.
They thoroughly deserve to be champions. Los Merengues have been without a doubt the form team in La Liga this season.
Current manager Bernd Schuster really could not have asked for a better start in his first year at one of the world's most prestigious football clubs.
Probably the only sour note to what has been a very solid campaign, is Real Madrid's capitulation to Roma in the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Although that particualar loss will not go down well with most Madrid supporters, at least they have witnessed a side that can at last score goals.
This season the spanish giants have scored 68 goals. The most of any other team in Spain.
Contributing to those flurry of goals is inspirational captain Raul who is Madrid's highest scorer with 22 and fourth overall in La Liga.
Another pivotal aspect of Madrid's game that has inproved immeasurably is their defence. They have only conceded 30 goals in 33 matches. That is also the best defensive record in La Liga.
Of course; with the likes of Robinho and Robben on the offensive, and Cannavaro, Pepe and Goalkeeper Casillas in defence, there really is not much a team can do is there?
Real Madrid are clearly in a transition phase at the moment. With the likes of Capello, Roberto Carlos and Beckham leaving the club for different reasons, Madrid seem to be unleashing a new aura about them.
Young stars led by Robinho,Higuain and Gago, are really paying dividends for Madrid's future.
The club seems to be more settled now and is really enjoying it's football.
The big challenge next season however will be to mount a serious challenge to claim their tenth Champions League title.
If there is one critisim of Real Madrid, it is their constant inability to perform in pressure cooker matches.
In recent seasons gone past, they have faltered against Roma and Bayern Munich in Europe's most important club competition.
While the La Liga title will guarantee silverware this season, Real Madrid know that their great history has been written in Europe.
Manager Bernd Schuster must get his enormously talented and laveshly paid individuals to perform on the big stage and deliver silverware that will etch the club into further glory.
A new dawn is rising for football's richest and most successful club. With a player roster that many teams can only dream of having, Real Madrid look set for an extremely successful and profitable future.
