Safin to play on for one more year

Two time Grand Slam Tennis winner Marat Safin yesterday announced season 2009 will most likely be his last on tour.
The Fiery Russian, who reached the summit of the ATP rankings eight years ago, says he will continue playing Tennis for at least one more year, after considering giving the game away a few weeks ago.
"I have decided to prolong my career for one more year," he said in his official website.
Safin's comments should ease the doubt of those that thought the former US Open champion would retire just weeks before the Australian Open.
Although the Russian's form of late has been all over the place on occasions (matched only be his temper), Safin has achieved a lot in the Tennis arena.
He reached the world no. 1 ranking in November 2000 and is considered a great hero in his native Russia, largely helped by the fact he won two grand slams early in his career, his first being at the US, followed by the Australian Open.
He was also a key member of Russia's champion Davis Cup team in their victories over France and Argentina, in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
At present, Safin has won 15 tournaments in his career, his last victory being at the Australian Open in 2005.
As for 2009, Safin will open his campaign in January in the Hopman Cup in Perth alongside his sister Dinara Safina.
Then its all eyes on the Australian Open.
