Safin to retire at season's end
January 6th 2009 01:01
Two time Grand Slam winner Marat Safin has officially announced his retirement from Tennis at the end of 2009.
The Russian, who won the US Open and the Australian Open titles in his career, plans to give away Tennis at the end of this year in search of a new life outside of court.
"This year will most likely be my last on tour. A new lifestyle awaits me after this but i hope that i can achieve good results this year by really enjoying my Tennis."
The 28 year old Safin has accomplished a lot since he made his debut.
He was a former world number 1, helped by the fact he won two Grand Slam titles (the US and Australian Open).
He was also a terrific servant for his native Russia, helping them win two Davis Cup titles, their most recent being their victory against Argentina in 2006.
Safin is currently competing in the Hopman Cup in Perth alongside sister Dinara Safina.
It has not been all smooth sailing for Safin in his career.
The fiery Russian has constantly been plagued by injury lately, which has cast his title winning abilities into the fire, with his last title being at the Australian Open in 2005.
Regardless, Safin will always have a soft spot for the game that made him a superstar.
"I will always love Tennis, but life is bigger than any green court. The idea of me hanging up my racquet does not scare me one bit."
