Novak Djokovic is now within grasp of Roger Federer's no.2 spot after winning the Shanghai Masters last night.
The Serbian defeated Russian player Nikolay Davydenko 6-1 7-5 in an hour and 42 minutes of game time. It is Djokovic's fourth title this year.
Djokovic imposed his signature on the trophy early against Davydenko, beating the Russian from all corners of the court.
In the end he won the title that forges the best eight players in a season, to compete in a round robin Masters series.
In the first set, Djokovic was brilliant - he beat Davydenko 6-1 in just thirty minutes of play.
The second set on the other hand was to be more complicated for the Serb because Davydenko needed to win to keep his hopes alive of landing his maiden Shanghai crown.
After being humiliated in the first set, Davydenko found his rhythm and reacted accordingly against Djokovic in a more even second set.
But at the critical stage of the match, with the score at five games apiece, two unforced errors from Davydenko and a volley winner from Djokovic marked the end of the game, which saw the current world no.3 clinch his first Shanghai crown.
With this title, Djokovic maintains third position in the ATP rankings and now finds himself just 10 points behind world no.2 Federer.
Indeed it has been a successful season for Djokovic, with the highlight coming from down under after he won the Australian Open - his first Grand Slam title. Not to mention he also won the Rome and Indiana Wells Masters tournaments.
But as per usual, how did Djokovic celebrate his victory in Shanghai ? By throwing his racquets and his clothes to the crowd.
