Argentine football pure gold again

August 24th 2008 01:10
The future is in good hands as Argentina win gold

Like four years ago in Athens, Argentina are the Olympic football champions. They beat Nigeria 1-0 in a game that was even until Di Maria provided the clinical finish to give Argentine football it's second consecutive gold medal.

For Argentina, it was a play of pure vertigo. The only way in breaking the monotony of a very even contest. The chip from Di Maria over the Nigerian goalkeeper, which is now apart of Argentine football folklore, gave the South Americans their second consecutive gold medal in Olympic football.

It was the necessary difference in providing 'La Seleccion' with the Olympic football crown and casting a team full of expectation into raptures.

The opening minutes of the final were a reflection of what was to come for the majority of the match. Argentina played their usual, flawless passing game while the Nigerians stood back and waited for a steal in possession to go on the counter attack.

Despite hardly going on the offensive, Nigeria showed plenty of steel and form in defence. Argentine stars Riquelme, Messi, Aguero and Di Maria seemed to be always thwarted by a poor final pass and the presence of a Nigerian defender who disturbed the South American's rhythm.

While Argentina dominated possession, Nigeria had the best opportunity of the first half to claim the lead and perhaps repeat their 1996 gold medal triumph in Atlanta over the

albiceleste.

Odemwingie failed to connect with a low cross that caused havoc for the Argentine defence. The danger was gone and it provided the reigning Olympic champions with a severe wake-up call.

Nigeria almost had the lead and knew full well that this game was for the taking. The rest of the first half provided few opportunities, with a Di Maria shot from outside the box the finale of what was a tight 45 minutes of football.

At the start of the second half, Argentina displayed a new attitude. The influence of Messi, which was non-existent at the start of the match, played a brilliant through ball for Sergio Aguero which amounted to nothing.

With championship pressure building, talent was to come to the fore.

After a deflection which landed on the feet of Messi, the Barcelona midfielder played a through ball to forward sensation Di Maria, who provided little deception in scoring Argentina's first goal - a delightful finish from a gifted player.

For the rest of the match, Nigeria were sparked into action (as they should have been in an Olympic final). The African's made Argentina work hard and complicated their cause for back to back gold.

There were scares aplenty for Sergio Batista's men as Nigeria went close on occasion's to forcing the match into extra time.

Argentina were made to suffer, as teams generally do when they are on the cusp of achieving glory.

But time eventually condemned the Nigerians to silver as the Argentine's once again repeated the triumph achieved in Athens four years ago. Their signature in Olympic football will remain clear come London 2012.

Wenger needs more arsenal

August 21st 2008 05:27

Much is made of Arsene Wenger's reluctance to buy British but his real reluctance is to buy from Premier League clubs with the exorbitant price tags that are inextricably attached.

In 12 years he has only bought five players from top-flight clubs in England, which is a remarkable figure considering Sir Alex Ferguson has bought 11 in the same period - paying massive sums for the likes of Dwight Yorke, Louis Saha, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick along the way - and various Chelsea managers have splashed out on 19 players from other English clubs.

Wenger undoubtedly got his fingers burnt in the summer of 2001 when he spent a combined £14m on Francis Jeffers and Richard Wright. Although they won the league the following season it was with a greater contribution from his free transfer signing Sol Campbell - the only one of his five Premier League buys who can be deemed an unqualified success.

It would be five years before Wenger would recruit from Arsenal's league again, with William Gallas arriving as part of the Ashley Cole move to Chelsea. Wenger would probably describe Gallas' spell as a success - particularly at a low price - but he has been the experienced head in a side that has won nothing, and he unravelled in spectacular fashion under pressure last season.

This time last year Wenger recruited from the Premier League for the fifth time - spotting a bargain in Lassana Diarra for £2m from Chelsea. He may have played only a handful of games but just six months later, Arsenal received £5.5m from Portsmouth for the Frenchman. Football-wise a poor decision (brought into sharp focus by the exit of Matheiu Flamini), but undoubtedly a fantastic piece of financial business.

So after the mistakes of 2001, Wenger will only ever buy from Arsenal's domestic rivals if the price is right. If Mikael Silvestre becomes the sixth in this list, it will be because he recognises that £750,000 for a man capped 40 times by France, who has played almost 250 top-flight games in England and won four Premier League titles, who can play at left-back or at centre-half, is a bargain.

It is less than five years ago that a partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Silvestre was considered the best in the country, and it was less than five months ago that Sir Alex Ferguson played him at left-back in a Champions League quarter-final. Silvestre may not be Nemanja Vidic, but he would still walk into most top-flight defences when fit, and he is still better than current Gunners' back-ups like Johann Djourou, Armand Traore and Philippe Senderos. Perhaps Wenger should have moved for Sylvain Distin a year ago instead, but that boat has now sailed.

In an age when Arsenal can somehow recoup £3m for someone of Justin Hoyte's 'ability', to spend a quarter of the money on a proven international footballer seems sensible. To those who complain that Wenger only buys unknown kids...here is your answer. If you can see past the blind hatred of anyone associated with Man United, you will see a move that makes sense.

Wenger is never going to buy a big-name player at the top of his game - that's not his schtick. But buying a still-decent player with his best seasons behind him should be seen as a refreshing change from buying kids that may or may not end up even half-decent. What's the bigger gamble? £750,000 on Silvestre or a similar amount on Amaury Bischoff

Argentina finally have game

August 20th 2008 00:01
Aguero played his best game against Brazil

Football always serves up revenge. While many will say it is a dish best served cold, Brazil's defeat will remain hot. After finishing runner-up on the last two editions of the Copa America, not to mention losing in the final of the Confederations cup in 2005, Argentina - who live and breath the world game, has suffered three humiliating blows against 'La Selecao'.

But the square up has finally arrived.

In the semi-finals of the Olympic football tournament, an opportunity presented itself for Sergio Batista's men to gain the revenge they have longed for years now. It was a chance Argentina took with both hands as they squashed, humiliated and annihilated Brazil 3-0 in Shanghai, qualifying for the gold medal match against Nigeria on Saturday.

Argentina's emphatic victory was won through sheer skill and determination. Just the way the Chinese faithful love it.

The first half served as an education for both sides. Speculation, concern and caution were all apart of the opening 20 minutes. The Riquelme - Messi show was yet to start due to Brazilian coach Dunga's tactic to pressure the Argentine captain one on one. Lucas stuck to Riquelme like glue.

Brazilian players Anderson and Marcelo focused their energy on containing Argentina’s right edge attack which contained Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi. On Brazil's side, Ronaldinho intended on showcasing his talents for Brazilian forward Rafael Sobis, who was left as a lone striker.

While Argentina played the better football, their were some alarms set by Brazilian back Rafinha. His persistence to attack Argentina's right side defence caused problems for 'La Seleccion'. Brazil's best opportunity bestowed itself to Sobis, who failed to strike the ball with precision close to goal.

The second half was all about Argentina. Riquelme was brilliant through his intentions to hold the ball and organise Argentina's game.

Despite the constant disturbances from Lucas, the will to attack Brazil always lingered on the thoughts of the Boca Juniors icon.

As Riquelme started to gain control, so did the authority of star midfielders Javier Mascherano and Fernando Gago. Their pressure forced Brazil to give up easy possession on their own side of the park, whilst granting Di Maria with the opportunity to create something for Argentina's cause.

Di Maria whipped in a beautiful cross for Sergio Aguero to establish a 1-0 lead for Batista's men.

After Argentina's goal, Dunga was made to act. He replaced the ineffective Sobis and Hernanes for AC Milan star Alexandre Pato and Thiago Neves. Two players that can cause a problem or two.

Despite the changes, Argentina's defence, which was led well by Pareja and Garay, stood firm. Garay in particular involved himself in most of his sides attacking threats. It was him in the end that played the through ball for Aguero to notch his second goal, after a clinical assistance from Messi.

After going two goals down, Brazil became desperate. Ronaldinho hit the post after striking a handsome free kick. Unfortunately for Dunga's men, that was all the new AC Milan midfielder provided in an otherwise disappointing display.

From then on, Argentina controlled possession and Riquelme was once again the architect. He managed to control the times and remained patient with the ball at his feet.

Once Brazil became desperate, Riquelme would seize the moment and provide Messi with possession to weave his magic. It was Messi's pass that found Aguero and allowed him to gain a penalty that would effectively end Brazil's participation in Beijing 2008.

The match was over as a contest and the normally calm persona of Brazil unravelled.

Lucas and Thiago Neves were both sent off for committing fouls on Mascherano. The superiority Argentina cast on their great rivals proved too hot to handle.

For Argentina, it was an impeccable triumph against a rival that has had its way with 'La Seleccion' for a couple of years. That aura though is now washing away.

Argentina will head now head to Beijing to face Nigeria - an opponent who defeated the South Americans in Atlanta 1996 for the gold medal. Its time for Batista's men to defend what is rightfully theirs.
