The altitude played its part that’s for sure. But when experienced Argentina captain Javier Zanetti tried to dribble his way out of his own box, only to loss possession and concede a penalty in the first half, the explanation to ‘La Seleccion’s’ 6-1 massacre against Bolivia became clear.

In all forms however, Zanetti was not the sole reason why Argentina suffered their worst loss in over sixty years against a brilliant Bolivia in La Paz.

Argentina were a shadow of the side that had attained terrific victories against the French and Venezuela. Yesterday morning, they suffered one of the worst defeats in their history against a Bolivia team who were rooted to the bottom of the South American World Cup qualifying zone.

Prior to the start of the match, coach Diego Maradona opted for a more controlled approach instead of the offensive vertigo that his side used to destroy Venezuela in Buenos Aires.

Martin Demichelis found himself in Argentina’s back four while FC Porto midfielder Lucho Gonzalez replaced the suspended Jonas Gutierrez.

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez beat Kun Aguero for a spot alongside Lionel Messi in attack. But it was to no avail.

The game that Argentina tried to play against the Bolivians literally fell into the abyss. Maradona’s men became claustrophobic, not only because of the altitude, but the willingness of a rival that pressured each and every Argentine in all sectors of La Paz.

When Argentina finally crumbled from Bolivia’s repeated blows, Marcelo Martins scored the opener for the home side after just eleven minutes of the first half.

Indeed Argentina’s will to turn the match around was destroyed by their apparent lack of energy - something Maradona hoped to avoid playing in the rugged climate of Bolivia.

Although Lucho Gonzalez equalised against the run of play for Argentina, the short burst of stamina in the side was diminished when Zanetti conceded a penalty to gift Bolivia a 2-1 lead.

From there, Argentina’s road to redemption became too steep, and Bolivia made the climb insummitable. Argentina were forced to defend in desperation and could only hope that they went into halftime only a goal behind.

This was not to be though as Da Rossa scored from a clinical header to put the Bolivians up 3-1 and finalise a game not even Maradona himself could inspire his troops to come back and win in the second half.

Instead, what followed was a catastrophe for Argentina, as Benfica midfielder Di Maria was sent off, leaving ’La Seleccion’ with ten men that were spilling blood all over La Paz.

It was here that Boliva were allowed to feast on an Argentine side that had its defensive structure destroyed by a team not known for its attacking prowess.

Botero completed his hat trick for Boliva, in the midst of the home side’s celebrations.

Bolivia had earned the right to do as they pleased, and at times, enjoyed themselves against an amateur Argentine defence which resembled the very definition of chaos.

Torrico scored the sixth goal for Bolivia and it was amazing to see the midfielder not even celebrate his strike, such was the constant ability of the Bolivians to find the back of the net.

As fulltime sounded, one could excuse Maradona for jumping off an altitude of over 3,000 metres. His beloved Argentina took a massive step backwards after previously taking three small steps forward prior to the Bolivia massacre.

Although Maradona suggested that any team would have suffered against Bolivia yesterday morning, the great man himself now knows that his beloved Argentina is once again in chaos. Despite the good early work, Maradona must once again build his team from scratch.

Former AC Milan forward Ronaldo still holds dreams of playing for Brazil, with the 2010 World Cup just over a year away.

The Corinthians striker has made it his objective to score 30 goals this season in order to speak with Brazilian national coach Dunga, in regards to a return to the international scene.

Although the road back to glory is a long one, Ronaldo is confident he will find himself in a yellow jersey once again.

"I have to score about 30 goals to have a chance of talking with Carlos Dunga," Ronaldo said.

"The World Cup for me is the biggest tournament in the world and it would be a pleasure for me to compete in 2010."

While he has high hopes of a return, Ronaldo insists he is not up to the physical standard necessary to regain his place in Brazil's national team.

"I have not yet reached 100 percent. During my time with injury, I gained about 11 kilograms but I have already lost about eight of those kilos."

Although Ronaldo wants to play for Brazil again, his hopes of returning to Europe however seem diminished, considering he is very happy to be on native soil again.

"I feel great being back home playing for Corinthians," he says. "I doubt I will receive any offers from European clubs to play there again."

At 32 years of age, Ronaldo has battled three serious knee injuries in his time in Europe. In his prime however, he won three world player of the year awards.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic starred as Inter Milan cruised to a 3-0 victory over rock-bottom Reggina at the San Siro to re-establish their seven-point lead at the top of Serie A on Sunday.

Second-placed Juventus had briefly reduced the arrears on Saturday with a highly-impressive 4-1 romp at Roma, but Jose Mourinho's men showed they were in no mood to concede any ground in the title race.

Two goals in the first 10 minutes effectively turned the top-versus-bottom clash into a non-contest, despite Inter playing with midfielder Esteban Cambiasso in a patchwork centre-back pairing due to injuries.

With only nine matches left, the chances of Juve catching Inter are diminishing and may even rest on the pair's clash in Turin next month.

After his star performance, Ibrahimovic hinted that he may be considering a future away from the San Siro.

"I'm totally focussed on winning the title but as for next season, we'll see," he said. "I'm very happy to be at Inter but next year we'll see."

Mourinho reacted by suggesting that Inter would survive without the big Swede.

"Ibrahimovic is a great player but no player is bigger than a club. He has become very important to Inter but certain clubs are bigger than any player or coach," said Mourinho.

In the race for fourth place, and the final Champions League qualifying position, Genoa maintained their two-point lead over Fiorentina.

Genoa beat Udinese 2-0 at home with goals from Giuseppe Sculli and Diego Milito while Romania captain Adrian Mutu scored the only goal in La Viola's 1-0 home win over Siena.

When Cristiano Ronaldo put Manchester United 1-0 up against Liverpool last night, Old Trafford was celebrating. The best two teams in the English Premier League were fighting out yet another furious derby on the back of terrific performances in the Champions League days earlier.

It seemed United were once again primed for back to back premierships, considering a win against Liverpool last night would have stretched their lead at the top of the table to ten points with nine rounds remaining.

But no, it was not to be. Liverpool, who were coming off a 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League were never going to lay down.

They equalised courtesy of an error from United defender Vidic, which Fernando Torres humbly accepted with a superb finish.

Near the climax of the first half, Liverpool found themselves in the lead, when Steven Gerrard was fouled by Patrick Evra to register a penalty which was converted by the in form Englishman.

In the second half, United pressed forward, eager to even things up. They pressed for a while but the Liverpool defence, which was marshalled well by Javier Mascherano, did not look like cracking at any stage.

Then United cracked. Vidic was sent off for a fowl and from the ensuing free kick, Brazilian Aurelio struck beautifully to grant the competition points to Liverpool.

It was now all about avoiding humiliation for United, a team that had a 16 match winning destroyed by a flamboyant Liverpool at home.

But the humiliation was not to be avoided as Dossena scored Liverpool's fourth goal to condemn United to one of their worst ever home defeats.

Liverpool now find themselves just four points away from the Red Devils in the race for the title. Judging from the way they are playing at the moment, that margin seems insignificant in their race for the Premiership.
