Ronnie magic just over the horizon

October 8th 2008 23:54

Ronaldinho's career has had its fair share of ups and downs. But the move to Italian giants AC Milan could be the tonic for the Brazilian midfielder to regain the form that made him the best player in world football.

"I am adapting to a new lifestyle here in Italy," Ronaldinho says. "But I will be number one again."

At a slow pace, the three time FIFA world player of the year, is getting accustomed to life at Milan. And with the goal he scored against arch rivals Inter, Ronaldinho hopes critics can stop judging his form, inturn start realising he can return to the pinnacle of the footballing world.

Three months have passed since he joined the 'Rossineiri' from Barcelona. At times he starts matches, while others he doesn't. His form has been up and down, side to side, but the Brazilian could be on his way back.

"Italian football is very tactical and very competitive. The goal I scored against Inter will be one of many I score for the 'rossonera'.

Whether he is on his way up or not, Ronaldinho admits he himself is out of the running for some of football's premier individual awards coming up soon.

"Hopefully in 2009, I will be one of the favourites," he says.

Despite being out of the running for some of the game's highest honours, Ronaldinho gazed into his own crystal ball and predicts the big three in Kaka , Ronaldo and Messi to fight it out.

"Messi is the best player in the world, alongside Kaka and Ronaldo," he says. "But who would I vote for in the Balon De Or?. I would probably cast two votes for each of my best friends. One for Kaka and one for Leo."

Despite the show of support for both Kaka and Messi, Ronaldinho handed out special praise for the Argentine international.

"For me it is no surprise," he says. "From the moment Leo first came to training for Barcelona, I knew he would be going down this path.

"One day, I will perhaps tell the story of how I was involved in the birth of one of the greatest footballers in history."

No more friendlies for Messi

October 7th 2008 21:20

Friendly international matches will no longer be on the agenda for Lionel Messi Barcelona has confirmed.

Messi, who earlier beat Barcelona's case to keep him in Spain during the Beijing Olympics, will most likely sit out Argentina's future friendlies which begin on the 19th of November against Scotland.

It seems a deal was struck between Argentina's football association and that of Barcelona.

When Messi was made available for the Olympics, the Catalan giants ordered they would be allowed to keep 'the flea' in Spain instead of him going off to play in meaningless international fixtures.

Three representatives of Barcelona are in Argentina right now trying to seal this agreement between them and the AFA.

Txiki Beguiristain - one of those three representatives, said it was all just business.

"We have come here to ratify the verbal agreement with the AFA prior to the Olympics.

"It is a priority gesture to protect Messi from fatigue and the consequences that come with playing in friendlies all over the world. The last thing we need is an injury."

Real Madrid have failed to beat Espanyol while Valencia regained top spot in La liga after defeating Valladolid away from home.

Madrid could only manage a two all draw against Espanyol in the Bernabeu, allowing Valencia to break clear on the summit of the Spanish Primera by beating Valladolid 1 nil.

Two goals from Madrid captain Raul allowed 'los Merengue' to salvage a point after twice coming from behind against the Catalan side, courtesy of goals from Raul Tamudo and Luis Garcia.

Despite avoiding defeat, the draw will not help Madrid after every team above them on the ladder registered wins on the weekend.

Schuster's side have now dropped to fifth position in La Liga, with 13 points next to their name.

Valencia meanwhile can thank Portuguese player Manuel Fernandez for their victory, after he scored the only goal in their win over Valladolid.

It was Valencia's fourth consecutive victory and they have also matched the great start to their 2003-2004 seasons where they ironically claimed the La Liga title.

After six rounds of competition, both Valencia and Villarreal lead the Spanish Primera with 16 points each. Valencia however are in first position due to their superior goal difference.

Sevilla are in third position with 14 points, one ahead of Barcelona, who yesterday destroyed Atletico Madrid by 6-1.
