Beckham the brand to hang out in Milan
October 23rd 2008 23:07
Beckham really is one of a kind. As he once again tries to rejuvenate his England career, thus at the time juggle appearances with Snoop Dogg and other Hollywood celebrities, the former England captain will begin a new chapter in his fruitful career by signing with Italian giants AC Milan.
Whatever the case it certainly seems like a terrific move all round for the most famous footballer (or celebrity) on the planet.
Whatever financial costs Milan had to pay for the signature of Beckham, they will surely make profits of immense proportions, particularly in shirt sales.
Perhaps even Victoria will be happy: Milan presumably has lots of very small clothes to try on and whatnot.
Indeed the man that has achieved more off the field than on it will indeed fill the San Siro to capacity in his first appearance for the 'Rossineiri'.
They will witness a man who married a Spice Girl, has misspelled tattoos, is known for Christ-like poses and the movie 'Bend It Like Beckham', and is also known for his associations with Pepsi and the dress senses of Hollywood couple ‘Tomcat’.
But how will the Milan faithful see him as a footballer?
Maybe they will witness the perfect dead-ball craft, and those occasional lovely long passes.
Maybe not. Because everything about Beckham seems reduced down now to just a couple of moments of brilliance, like that brilliant free kick against Sydney FC at Telstra Stadium.
But did anyone realise Beckham's LA Galaxy still lost the match 5-3?
Indeed this is what Milan and Carlos Ancelotti could potentially deal with here. The most-written about English footballer of his generation who is primarily known for his dead ball heroics.
Well, at least he can a kick a football. Very well in fact. Even if he does come home drunk from one of Hollywood's top nightspots.
Aside from it all, Beckham has been a fine player, and a good person. At the prime of his career at Manchester, he was constantly in the running for some of football's premier individual honours such as the 'Balon De Or' and 'FIFA World Player of the year' award.
For some time he was not only the English side's most consistent player but the only one who actually seemed like a decent guy. Somebody you could invite round your house and share some funny moments without being too overawed by the man standing in front of you.
He has shown some guts coming out of semi-retirement to fight for a place at Milan and perhaps it will provide a route back into the England first eleven.
But why.
Because even Beckham thinks that in this day and age of the hyped up Premier League and the Gerrards, Lampards and Walcott’s, the most effective way for his beloved England to score a goal is to give him the ball and allow his famed right foot to do the rest.
