Raul now king of Madrid

February 1st 2009 00:27

Real Madrid captain Raul has equalled club great Alfredo Di Stefano's goal tally as the Spaniard opened the scoring in his side's 2-0 win over Numancia.

Raul now has 307 goals with 'Los Merengue' and stands alongside Di Stefano as the greatest goal scorer in Madrid's history.

It was a terrific night for Madrid as they notched up their sixth consecutive triumph with victory away to Numancia.

All eyes were on Raul as he attempted to equal Di Stefano's goal scoring record of 307 goals.

He did exactly that with a clinical strike that will be remembered by Madrid fans for ages to come.

As a captain should, Raul laid the foundations for Madrid to outclass Numancia for the rest of the encounter.

Dutch midfielder Robben then added the icing on the cake for Madrid as he scored the decisive goal to seal the three points for 'Los Merengue'.

The only downer for Madrid was the expulsion of midfielder Fernando Gago, who was sent off for repeated offences.

His departure allowed Numancia to gain a little bit of momentum throughout the match, but nothing to give Madrid fans any worries.

Although Madrid's win undoubtedly belongs to Raul, their victory is just another small step up the ladder in pursuit of rivals Barcelona, who sit nine points ahead with a game in hand.

Messi to Madrid not an option for Leo

January 26th 2009 00:55

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is content with finishing his career at the Nou Camp in the midst of transfer rumours suggesting the Argentine will go to Real Madrid.

Indeed Barcelona supporters can rest in peace with Messi's comments highlighting that he wants to stay with the Catalan club for the rest of his career.

After a week of immense transfer speculation in Spain linking Messi to Madrid, 'the Flea' took the opportunity to distance himself away from a possible move to the Bernabeu.

"I won't leave Barcelona, only if they kick me out. I arrived here as a boy and the club has given me everything."

Messi has already provided Barca fans with some love of his own in their recent league victory over Numancia at home.

The Argentine scored two goals in a 4-1 win that keeps them on top of the Spanish Primera Liga.

Messi's season so far reflects Barcelona's results in a season in which they have become the form team throughout Europe.

The star Midfielder already has 23 goals next to his name (14 in La Liga), in a side that is playing the most attractive football in Spain, and who sits as a very comfortable leader in La Liga.

Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola is currently full of praise for Messi and his divine play at the moment.

"Its been a long time since I last saw a player like Messi," Guardiola said.

Indeed Guardiola and all Barca fans can breath easy because Leo is here to stay.

Kaka forever in Milan

January 15th 2009 00:08

AC Milan midfielder Kaka says he 'wants to grow old in Milan' in the face of Manchester City's record breaking 100 million Euro offer for the Brazilian.

City have flexed their financial muscle at Kaka, yet the former World Player of the Year remains unruffled at Manchester's massive offers.

Kaka made it clear to Italian media that he intends on staying with Milan for the rest of his career.

Although City would offer Kaka a contract that would yield 15 million euros a season, the Brazilian says he has already rejected offers of that magnitude before.

It would be hard for any player to leave a world class club like Milan, let alone ones as influential as Kaka.

The Brazilian midfielder won the 2007 FIFA player of the year award after he helped guide Milan to Champions League glory, beating English giants Liverpool.

He also won the World Club Championships in Tokyo defeating Boca Juniors in the final.

Even though City's status in the Premier League is growing with the recent inclusion of Brazilian star Robinho, their roster can not attest to the divine skill currently at Milan.

The Rossineri have some of the finest players at their disposal, among them Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Seedorf, Nesta, Kaladze and Inzaghi.

Kaka completes the puzzle of an electric roster that is constantly in contention for some of Europe's major club championships.

Indeed City’s cash has to come hand in hand with success on the field if Kaka is to even consider moving from the San Siro.

Ronaldo world's best, but for how long?

January 12th 2009 23:56

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Fernando Torres, Xavi and Kaka were all presumably in the running for the FIFA world player of the year award announced last night.

All of them are terrific players for their respective world class clubs, with an ability to turn a game of football on its head with their unique talents.

In the end, they were recognised as the top five players in world football at the moment, and few could argue with the selections.

But when judging the ultimate honour FIFA has to offer, there was always going to be only one winner out of a talented ensemble player cast.

Ronaldo was the man that dominated in the voting process, just like he dominated everything before him in a 2007/08 season that yielded 42 goals in all competitions, not to mention guiding Manchester United to Premier League and Champions League glory.

His only sour note - an unexpected early exit for Portugal in Euro 2008.

In the end, Ronaldo's only real challenger was Argentine and Barcelona midfielder Lionel Messi, who played well last season, but failed to win any tournaments in a very lacklustre Barcelona outfit.

Regardless, he was the star in an side that had lost the magic of Ronaldinho and the goal scoring potency from star forward Samuel Eto'o.

Indeed Messi's flair and skill nearly guided Barcelona to a Champions League semi-final victory over Manchester United, considering he tormented the Red Devils inside out in both legs in 2007/08.

But despite outplaying Ronaldo in their own personal duel, the Portuguese superstar was always going to end up winning the coveted World Player of the Year award.

Ronaldo finished with 935 votes last night, compared to Messi's 678 - a huge gape that was expected nonetheless.

The voting showed that Ronaldo was by far the best player in 2007/08, while Messi humbly accepted his second consecutive year of finishing runner-up.

Messi could take heart from the fact that he too produced an enormous gap between second and third player placings.

He beat Fernando Torres of Liverpool by over 400 votes as the Spaniard finished in third position with a meagre 203 votes.

But what of 2009/10?

Ronaldo is not having the most dominant of seasons, all the while Messi is helping craft Barcelona as the most in form club in Europe.

Torres is also becoming an integral part of a Liverpool outfit that sits in first position in the Premier League standings.

It seems now that even though Ronaldo won the award by a lengthy margin, the title of world’s best is much closer than one thinks.
