AC Milan manager Carlos Ancelotti has fallen in love. Not with an Italian supermodel, but Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho.

Ancelotti greeted the luckless former Barcelona player with open arms. In return, Ronaldinho has repaid the affection shown by his new coach by being his sides leading goal scorer this season in the Serie A.

"I did not think that he would be as decisive for Milan as this," Ancelotti said.

"But we are talking about a player who is out of the ordinary which says a lot about why he hasn't lost his touch or magic. He is a grand player."

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ancelotti also took the opportunity to downplay the so called rivalry between Kaka and Ronaldinho in the battle for the leader of Milan's supreme mid-field.

"The world of football is fantastic, especially when you have two of the world's best players in your side.

"Of course, when you have two great players in your team, there is always talk about a rivalry. But then again, if there is only one great player, there is always talk about the prospect of a side being all one man.

"I have had the honour of playing alongside players such as Gullit and Van Basten and there was never any hint of a rivalry going on back then. Why should there be one now?"

So with two of the best players of the modern era in his side, Ancelotti may even opt to unleash another superstar of the world game in the form of English midfielder David Beckham.

"I will play him that's for sure. With Beckham, Pirlo, Seedord, Kaka and Ronaldinho in the side, there is always going to be goals.”

World football XI by L'Equipe

December 26th 2008 23:56

Prestigious French magazine L'Equipe, has named its football starting XI for the 2008/09 season comprising of the best players of the year.

In a team dominated by European footballers, there were only two South Americans in the whole lineup with Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves making the starting side.

Players from the English Premier League dominated the team with six inclusions, while the Italian Serie A only had the lone representative.

The team that was best represented was Manchester United, with four players ( three of them defenders) making the world XI.

L'Equipe said the side was made up of players who achieved silverware with either club or country in the previous season.

"Our idea of a world XI of 2008 should compromise players who achieved success in Europe last year, whether it be for Manchester United in the Champions League or for Spain in this years Euro competition."

So, with all that in mind, here are the starting eleven as put by L'Equipe.

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid- Spain); Alves (Barcelona- Spain), Río Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic y Patrice Evra (all of Manchester United- England), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool- England), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United- England), Xavi and Lionel Messi (Barcelona- Spain); Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter- Italy) and Fernando Torres (Liverpool- England).

Inter offer three for the price of one

December 25th 2008 01:30
Milito could be the beneficiary of a unique Inter deal

Serie A leaders Inter Milan are willing to offer three players to Genoa in exchange for leading league striker Diego Milito.

In football, it is unusual to see player exchanges take form with triple offers. In Basketball, especially in the NBA, it is considered the primary way to snare some good players.

But Inter have adopted this unique approach to snare Genoa forward Milito who is scoring lots of goals in this year's Serie A competition.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho is willing to offer Argentine back Nicolas Burdisso, Italian Mario Balotelli and Nigerian Obinna to Genoa in exchange for the services of their star striker, Milito.

Mourinho's unique strategy to snare Milito will be discussed with Inter officials on the 2nd of January next year.

The former Chelsea manager is desperate to bring some goal scoring potency to Inter next season.

"We are missing the 15 or 20 goals in a regular season, which in the past, we would have most certainly recieved from the likes of Julio Cruz and Hernan Crespo," Mourinho said.

With Cruz not in the best of form and Crespo hardly used from the Inter bench, Mourinho has decided to go on the market in search for a new striker, with Milito at the top of his list.

Others that may possibly make their way to the San Siro include Mali striker Frederich Kanoute, Brazilian Luis Fabiano and Spaniard David Villa.

All the talk may be on Barcelona's terrific form in La Liga and Champions League competition, but Atletico Madrid have shown the skill and flair to be considered the dark horse for both these tournaments when the season resumes next year.

For the first time in many moons, Atletico consistently find themselves in the top half of the Spanish Primera Liga, finishing fourth last season, while they currently occupy second position on the table heading into 2009.

Ever since the departure of talisman Fernando Torres to Liverpool, many thought Atletico would struggle in his absence to score goals on a regular basis.

But as soon as Torres left the club, a little Argentine by the man of Sergio Aguero comes to the fore and takes charge of an Atletico side that is now reaping enormous dividends due to his performances.

Aguero really has transformed into one of Europe's most lethal strikers, developing a devastating partnership with fellow forward Diego Forlan, which has now became one of the most influential strike forces in La Liga.

On their way to securing a Champions League birth last season, Aguero and Forlan were at the forefront of Atletico's success, scoring over 30 goals between them to lay the foundations for the club to finish in the top four for the first time in many years.

Aguero in particular was outstanding, finishing with 20 goals last season to eventually just fall short of receiving the Trofeo Alfredo Di Stefano for the best player in the league.

Indeed Aguero and Forlan's partnership with each other is still reaping dividends for the club heading into the winter break.

Atletico have the second best attack in La Liga at the moment scoring 38 goals. The Aguero (9) - Forlan (10) connection has been responsible for 19 of those clinical strikes.

It is once again the deadliest strike force in La Liga at the moment, considering the other partnership between Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi involves a forward and a midfielder.

With the winter break to look forward to, Atletico can be optimistic that their strike power can deliver them some silverware next season.

They qualified second in a tough Champions League group headed by Liverpool, PSV and Marseille.

Having secured a knock out birth, Atletico now must face Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto for a place in the quarterfinals.

With one of Europe's most consistent strike forces on their side, one feels Atletico will have the upper hand when the two teams meet in the premier club competition on the planet.
