Davis Cup looks set for a Spanish finale

September 16th 2008 22:14

Davis Cup Tennis is always full of emotion and guarantees a terrific spectacle for all. It is no doubt then that it is the World Cup of Tennis and it is a tournament that players of the highest order aspire to win.

As we approach the semi-finals of this years Davis Cup, Argentina, Russia, Spain and the USA all have supreme chances in obtaining glory for their respective nations.

But if we were to magnify the chances more closely, it seems Argentina and Spain, with home ground advantage, have the best opportunity to progress to the final.

Indeed Spain are heavy favourites against the USA.

The Spaniards boost two of the best singles players in world tennis with Rafael Nadal spearheading the formidable Spain team.

It's no bad then to have a very able backup with David Ferrer also in the Spanish line-up.

When the two teams play in the Plaza de Toros in Madrid, the USA will be underdogs no doubt, but their history in this competition suggests they will still be very difficult to defeat.

Andy Roddick will lead the Americans into battle with Sam Querrey the other singles man. The loss of James Blake will no doubt hurt the American nations cause for another Davis cup trophy.

The USA though still boost arguably the most dominant doubles pairing in world tennis with Bob and Mike Bryan still at the helm in Davis cup competition.

The Bryan brothers have form as well, winning the US Open this year - their maiden Grand Slam title in 2008.

But one still feels this has a Spanish victory written all over it.

Nadal should beat Roddick and Ferrer should no doubt beat Querrey. Cold-blooded, yes, but on form, these two players should provide the foundations for Spain to qualify for the final.

Awaiting the winner of the Spain-USA tie will be either Argentina or Russia.

This tie, which will be played in Buenos Aires, offers the opportunity for Argentina to take revenge after losing the final of the Davis Cup in 2006 against the Russians.

In that decider, Nalbandian was the strongest player from both teams, accounting for both Davydenko and Safin.

Unfortunately though, Nalbandian’s backups have not been up to his standard of play in recent seasons.

Until now.

In Nalbandian's side stands a 19 year old Argentine prodigy by the name of Juan Martin Del Potro.

He was the first player ever to win his first four career titles in succession. He also made the quarterfinals of the US Open, losing a thriller to eventual finalist Andy Murray.

Although Nalbandian is still higher up in the rankings, Del Potro has taken over the mantle as Argentina's best player.

The current no.13 is in terrific form and no doubt represents the future of Argentine Tennis.

Awaiting Del Potro and his Argentine team-mates are the Russians, who will count with the consistent Davydenko and Tursonov.

Davydenko is never an easy challenge and will be primed against a Buenos Aires crowd that will let him no he is in Argentina.

Just ask the Australians.

Tursonov is another consistent tennis player, but he will have his work cut out trying beat an Argentine side desperate for that elusive Davis Cup triumph.

In a tight contest, it seems Argentina are in the box seat to make the final along with Spain.

All stations to history for Fed Express

September 9th 2008 22:04

After winning the US Open yesterday morning, Roger Federer only had one thing to say.

"This is a special moment in my career."

It wasn't special in regards to Federer winning his 13 Grand Slam, nor was it special for winning five US Open's in a row, equalling greats Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras.

What makes it so satisfying for Federer is the will it has given him to go on and claim history.

After his US open triumph over Brit Andy Murray, Federer is not content with 13 Grand Slam titles under his belt.

"If there is one thing that's certain," says Federer "It is the fact that I do not intend on staying with 13 Grand Slams. That would be terrible.

"This title represents everything for me and I thank all the people that attended over the two weeks."

After notching up his 56th career title, Federer looks on to the Masters of Shanghai and no doubt, at the forefront of his mind, will be to claim the world no.1 tag back from Rafael Nadal.

"Rafa is playing at a grand level at the moment, so it will be an interesting battle as the year ends."

Federer, as always, remains full of satisfaction. The Swiss train is finally on a roll again.

Roger Federer and Andy Murray are looking for glory in the US Open.

It will be a final pitting two of the most talented Tennis players against each other, with Murray hoping to cut Federer's dominance at the US Open in which he has won his past four grand slam titles.

Murray has form on his side. The British player defeated new world no.1 Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals in a rain delayed match. He disposed of the Spaniard in 3 hrs and 30 minutes to find himself in the final of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

For Federer, it's all about getting one step closer to the all time Grand Slam record held by American Pete Sampras. Indeed if Federer wins the final at Arthur Ashes stadium, he will equal tennis legends Jimmy Connors and Sampras in winning the most US Open's in history.

But Murray will not be thwarted by the immense challenge in front of him. The 21 year old Brit will be world number four by the end of the week and this may be a chance of a lifetime to dethrone one of history's greatest players.

Certainly Murray has the game to disrupt Federer. His serve is fast and his Forehand true. He is a great defender often reaching balls that seem ungettable to most players. It does help being tall.

Perhaps Federer could win this game in three sets though, due to Murray's late finish against Nadal. Fitness could prove to be the key factor here.

"It was hard for me to sleep knowing I was two sets up and I had to finish the job the next morning." Murray said.

"Thankfully though, I did."

Although it will not be a Federer-Nadal final, Murray alone has the potential to perhaps make his intentions clear of being world no.1 sometime next year. No doubt Federer will be hell bent on claiming his elusive 2008 Grand Slam title after winning three in 2007.

But Murray has other plans and the 21 year old Brit is now ready to make history for himself and for the people of Britain, who have longed basked with now retired Brit Tim Henmann. The drought could now be over.
