The Queen of Women's Hockey
November 29th 2008 21:31
In Women's field Hockey, there seems to be only one individual that captivates crowds all over on a consistent basis. Her name is Luciana Aymar, who has now become accustomed to winning the female Hockey player of the year award, with this her fifth title in Los Angeles.
Argentina's ‘Lucha’ Aymar is at it again. Her form this year has been recognised by the International Federation of Hockey as the best of any other, and for that, she wins her fifth player of the year award, following on her successes in 2001, 04, 05 and 07.
Aymar's results on the field were a reflection of why she was crowned the world's best for a record fifth time.
She helped Argentina gain a Champions Trophy in Germany earlier this year, while her efforts also guided 'las Leonas' to a Bronze medal finish at the Beijing Olympics.
Not only did she garner some results on the field, she has established herself off it, with the FIH naming her as a 'legend of women's Hockey'.
Aymar was of course thrilled at the result and says her victory provides her with the energy to keep playing.
"Although I feel great and see this as a huge personal achievement, I feel that receiving this honour allows me to keep representing Argentina against the world.
"In that case, I will use this trophy to pay homeage to all my supporters who support Argentine hockey, and those who follow us to no end."
Aymar was also thrilled when she was named as a 'legend of hockey' in Los Angeles.
"Since the start of my professional career, to be named a legend in the sport you play is the highest honour that any sportsperson can aspire to.
"It is a terrific honour to have and it is one that will allow me to keep growing."
