The Spanish finally conquer, must consolidate
June 30th 2008 01:14
Prior to the the final against Germany, the population of Spain went brain dead like Jan Brady.
The Buzz around Madrid was enormous, expectation high. The curse that is the Spanish national team could finally come to an end.
And so it did at long last.
Liverpool forward Fernando Torres scored the most important goal in Spain's history. Full of style and glory, Torres ensured Spain's final victory will sell record breaking copies.
While the Spanish are now out in the open, celebrating with fireworks galore, The Germans are drowning their sorrows.
Like a good old fashioned alcholic, Germany will drink and sleep the night through as a fourth EURO title slipped by their grasp.
The disease of failure however has now been cured by Spain.
Coach Luis Aragones has to be commended for stripping his sides cautious approach in recent years.
He alone has transformed this side into an attacking nation capable of stealing any person's wallet if not on guard.
Spain's attack has increased tenfold. The likes of David Villa and Fernando Torres are finally starting to settle into the domnant attacking force we knew they could become.
Their championship at EURO 2008 has granted 'La Furia Roja' with the ticket to an era where the Spanish can now assert their dominance.
Now that the pressure is off their backs, Spain can now start swinging on their path to South Africa 2010.
Fast enough to make any person's eyes spin, Spain have ended a rollercoaster ride through Switzerland and Austria with a trophy that labels them Europe's supreme nation in football.
And rightly so.
From the outset, the Spanish never looked headed. They knocked each and everyone of their opponents to the ground faster than Mike Tyson in his hey day.
While many throats will be sore across Madrid, they can at least now enjoy the aftermath of their teams championship winning run through Europe.
Off the field, many across Spain will approach each other in a nice manner. Their long search for glory is over.
They have witnessed their nation crush all before them in a display of football worth watching.
An everlasting moment, Spain have now found reason to expect further glory in two years time.
Now that they have ended a drought colder than a snow season that's twenty below freezing, Spain have finally became the flavour on everybody's lips.
A preview of what's to come for the Spanish will be revealed this October when World Cup qualifying begins.
While magazines across Spain will dwell over their football team's recent glory - their reviews full of envy, 'la Furia Roja' must keep their crystals in check as a new form of combat awaits them on the path to South Africa.
Now realising the form capable of sending other teams to shame, Spain must extort all the focus to the qualfying campaign coming up.
Though support will be better than ever, Spain must not blow their EURO crown out of proportion. It was a title worth savouring but there are more important matches to be played than the one against Germany.
On their path to South Africa, they will meet Turkey, Belgium, Bosnia, Armenia and Estonia.
Only an impulsive thinker would suggest Spain will get knocked out in this group for qualification for World Cup 2010.
There is enough holes in this group to grant Spain a clear passage to World Cup glory. Only Turkey and Belgium look the most threatning to cause Spain some form of trouble.
In saying that, Spain won't go to the World Cup on a limousine, all nice and dressed for a footballiing assault in South Africa.
Like a caged demon, Spain must play to the potential that allowed them to dominate all who stood in their way in EURO 2008.
Judging by their recent performances, there is enough form at present to convince anyone that Spain will cause a spin come World Cup time.
Although second opinions will roam, this is Spain's best period in which to claim the jewel missing from their sacred crown.
Fresh off a EURO championship win over Germany, Spaniards across the globe are rightly entitled to feel a head rush of optimism over the coming years.
Their team of superstars finally conquered Europe. The blush that comes with an early exit non-existant.
Finally Spain have made it home. The keys to a World Cup are now in their grasp.
