Wales champions, Pumas make history
March 8th 2009 00:15
Wales have continued their remarkable form in international Rugby by winning the Rugby Dubai Sevens, beating Argentina in the final.
The Welsh, who earlier lost to the Pumas 14-0 in the group stages, got the sweetest revenge by accounting for the same opposition 19-12 in the decider.
Aled Thomas scored the winning try for Wales with two minutes remaining, after Argentina twice came from behind to even the scores.
Although Wales will rightfully celebrate their championship, the Pumas also have cause to celebrate.
Argentina, still without regular competition, made the World Sevens final for the first time in their history.
They topped their group by defeating champions Wales 14-0 to qualify for the finals.
The Pumas then confronted South Africa in an absorbing contest. Argentina trailed 12-0 against the Springboks, only to come back and win 14-12.
Argentina then showed no mercy against Kenya, beating them 12-0 to register a place in the final for the first time in their history.
Indeed another page has been written in the history of Argentine Rugby, to coincide with the remarkable 2007 World Cup performance by the Pumas.
World Seven's Pumas coach Duncan Forrester was full of praise for his troops.
"Before we got here, if one would have told me that we would reach the final, I would have taken it," Forrester said.
"But now, to lose like that in a final makes me frustrated. We committed too many errors and kicked the ball too much.
"Regardless, I have to take my hat off to this team. They play with an enormous heart."
