Whitewash for South Africa on the cards
January 1st 2009 00:52
The South African team had a "proper party" on Tuesday evening following their historic Test series victory over Australia, but they know the job is not done yet.
The Proteas became the first visiting team to win a Test series on Australian soil in 16 years when they won the second Test at the MCG by nine wickets.
Injured middle-order batsman Ashwell Prince says the South Africans want to keep the momentum in the third and final Test in Sydney.
"We have just come off a tour of England where we led 2-0 and were then a bit disappointing in the final Test," Prince told AAP.
"We don't want to make the same mistakes and this third Test is obviously important for the rest of the summer. We still have three Tests to play against them at home and to win this (third) Test will obviously keep the momentum with us. Momentum is important and we certainly don't want to give it back to them.
"We expect Australia to come back strongly. There are some new guys in their squad and they will want to do well enough to stake a claim for the tour of South Africa as well as the Ashes coming up.
"They have a lot to play for but so do we. We will take it one game at a time. We want to win the home series as well but we will take it one game at a time."
South Africa will replace Australia as the world's number one Test team if they win the final match in Sydney, and Prince says there goal will be to go from strength to strength.
"We have come a long way as a team," he added.
"We have won in most countries in the last year to 18 months. The only place we didn't win was India where we came away with a draw. The guys are very confident of their own ability and very proud of what they have achieved and we are looking forward to build on that and go from strength to strength.
\"It goes without saying that, if you are at the top, you want to stay there for as long as possible. That goes for any sportsman and any team. I am sure that will be the goal going forward."
