Who is the greatest of all time?

A true Legend- Maradona lifts Argentina's second World Cup

So who is the greatest soccer player of all time?

Every individual on this great earth has an opinion on this million dollar question.

It is a question that has caused so much conflict throughout football’s timeline but is one that lacks a defining answer.

Who’s to say there is an answer?

Many players have graced the pitches of the world’s most popular sport, each of them eager to stand alone at the top of football’s glorious past, present and future.

Legends have come and gone but their names will always be remembered. Is this a sign of ultimate glory.

Some Legends still walk in our presence but people already know that when they pass, they too will walk with giants.

Ultimately this question in the end can not be answered by an individual or an organisation no matter how big or famous.

It is a thought that billions around the world share with contrasting opinion. It is a thought that no sole individual will be able to alter.

The fans of this great game will each decide who football’s greatest icon is.

Like you, I too have an opinion on this subject that always seems to strike up conversation, some more heated than others.

But if this writer was to give his personal view, I would never go passed Diego Maradona.

I was not around to see him play at his prime but from what I can gather he certainly inspired all to play the game with a passion and determination that conclusively allowed others with him to play great football.

Despite all his controversies and upheavals with FIFA, he was always a man that spoke his mind and played to the very end.

He literally changed the way the world game has been played forever.

The No.10 shirt Maradona always wore has since became a symbol of pride and perfection and is one every kid or teenager at a local football club dreams of wearing, whether it be at training or on the games biggest stage.

Maradona was a true leader of men and in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico he tore every team apart to claim football’s most prestigious prize. Right then and there he became immortalised.

Such a power was Maradona’s presence, he even catapulted Napoli to glory which was a club that never really reached the limelight before his eventual presence took the little Italian club by storm.

Despite a below par end to his career, Diego Maradona for me will always be the one.

Such is his presence it seems many have labelled him the Jesus Christ of soccer. He even has a church in his honour.

And if the hand of god still stands there can be no denying that wherever Maradona goes, he will always have the respect and compassion of those around him.

I know this is a view many do not share with me due to Pele being on the other side of the spectrum.
A lot of individuals have named the Brazilian as their legend due to the fact that he scored over 1000 goals and won three World Cups.

Those achievements are quite phenomenal and say a lot about his standing in the game. However Pele wasn’t a leader of men. He played with a fantastic team in his era and many of today’s superstars agree that Maradona would lead their side into battle any day.

But this is just me. Feel free to express your view and let your thoughts be heard!

Hi Alan,

George Best if for no other reason than because he could go out on all night bender and perform super human feats on the field the next day..

After that Pele and Maradona sit at number 2 and 3 respectively...all are unequalled professionals with ball skills that shame the rest.

I would have to say that the game today has become so much faster and better that you cannot compare old players with the players of todays time...
