Wimbledon ladies final - Serena Vs Venus
July 4th 2008 00:24
The Lowdown
That's right folkes, the sisters of fate are at it again. Both Serena and Williams had few scares on their path to another Wimbledon final. Both dominated proceedings against their semi-final opponents and will now look to claim bragging rights on the legendary surfaces of Wimbledon.
For the record
Venus Williams is the reigning Wimbledon champion and has won four Grand Slam titles at the all England club Compared to Serena's two.
However, Serena's Wimbledon titles were achieved when playing against her sister in the final.
Both sisters were clinical in their semi-final matchups with Serena defeating Jie Zheng 6-2 7-6 and Venus beating Dementieva 6-1 7-6.
Overall, both sisters have confronted each other 16 times with Serena holding a 9-7 winning advantage.
Form Guide
Both sisters are yet to drop a set at Wimbledon. All their matches on route to the final offered few stumbling blocks.
Venus has only played one tiebreak so far in Wimbledon and that was against Russian Dementieva in last night's semi-final
Venus has smashed 34 aces which ranks second for all ladies at Wimbledon. Only Sister Serena is higher with an amazing 48 aces.
Venus however, has the most double faults in the ladies draw, conceding 27. That is equal first with Russian Chakvetadze.
Both Venus and Serena are clinical when given break point opportunties. The sisters are equal second in converting breaks with each registering 23 breaks of serve against their opponents. Russian Dementieva leads the way with 34.
Key for Venus
Venus has been clinical in her matches en route to the Wimbledon final. She is yet to drop a set, showing her ability to close out matches with force and verve. In order to match her game with the power of Serena, Venus must limit her double faults as it will cost her against her more powerful sister.
Venus's speed around the court is her arsenal. If she can take control from the baseline, it is unlikely Serena will be able to match it with her more experienced counterpart.
Key for Serena
Unlike Venus, Serena dominates through means of power. Her serve is the most lethal on the ladies tour and is constantly able to produce shots of the highest calibre on any part of the ground. Her backhand is probably the best going around on the women's tour courtesy of Justin Henin Hardene's retirement. Serena's first service percentage is clinical, registering an 80 percent winning total when the eight time Grand Slam champ serves first at Wimbledon
Prediction
This should be a close contest. Both Serena and Venus have been dominant in all their matches at Wimbledon this year. Both have shown the eagerness to close contests early in their proceedings to reach the final. Serena looks the more likely to cause damage given her power on the court is rarely matched by those even in the top ten of Women's tennis. Venus may have the crowd on her side given her more layback nature. Regardless of the family ties, both are competitors of the highest order in any sport and both will ensure a grand spectacle. In the end, Venus has the game to cause an upset.
